New Title Released

One of my latest collaborative titles is now out! Eat for Extraordinary Health & Healing, published by Rodale, is available here. The wonderful Ally Machate edited, and a companion cookbook is available.

I'm currently working on another title for Rodale, on chronic inflammation. Look for that one in the spring of 2017.

Sirenland 2015

In March I took part in my first-ever writers' conference, and man, did I ever start with a bang. Sirenland, a conference in glorious Positano, Italy founded by memoirist and novelist Dani Shapiro, filmmaker and journalist Michael Maren, and writer and founder of One Story Hannah Tinti, exceeded my expectations in every way. I met one of my own personal literary heroes, Jim Shepard, made dozens of new writer friends, was treated like a queen at the stunning Le Sirenuse hotel, and participated in an incredible workshop with none other than recent Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Doerr. I really can't say enough about how helpful the conference was and what a privilege it was to attend. Interested in applying? Applications open on September 15, 2015 for the March 2016 tenth anniversary conference.

Author Calla Devlin

Huge congratulations to my dear friend and writers' group member Calla Devlin, whose debut YA novel recently sold to Simon & Schuster. Please check out her new web site here, and stay tuned for more information on the fall 2016 book release.

Curseborn Saga!

In a long-overdue post, I'm happy to announce that Volume I in The Curseborn Saga, Fade to Black, is now available in paperback and e-book. If you're into fantasy, slipstream, anime, manga, swordplay, magic, epic adventure tales, or any and all of the above, you'll fall for The Curseborn Saga, which was created by four extremely talented guys in San Diego. Trowa D. Cloud is the main writer of the Four Lords, and he's joined by co-creators Marten D. Shanks, Squall D. Ace, and Simon Gatsu Sandoval. These guys already have tens of thousands of followers on Facebook, and you can follow them on Twitter and Instagram as well. Why not join in the fun!

Volume II, Cheaters Never Prosper, is scheduled for release June 1, and don't miss the great artwork and sneak peek manga on their website. Keep checking back in with them for information on an upcoming film based on the books as well.

Congratulations to four great guys who envisioned an entire alternate universe and have brought it to life.

Heal Your Heart Available on Kindle

Dr. Michael Miller's Heal Your Heart: The Positive Emotions Prescription to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, is now available for Kindle, just in time for the holidays. The book is already garnering five-star reviews. Congrats, Dr. Miller!

Mutchler on Maddow

Terry Mutchler's Under this Beautiful Dome continues to receive a great deal of positive media coverage. And I'm very pleased to share that she'll be on The Rachel Maddow Show tonight! Tune in at 9 p.m. Eastern time to MSNBC, or check back here later for a link to Maddow's interview of Mutchler.

Under this Beautiful Dome Released

Under this Beautiful Dome: A Senator, a Journalist, and the Politics of Gay Love in America from client Terry Mutchler is now available. You wouldn't know it from that dullest of sentences, but I'm over the moon about this one! Naturally I'm thrilled every time a client publishes a book, but Terry endured searing experiences of loss, betrayal, grief, and doubt -- and she crafted all of it into a brave and beautiful tale. Under this Beautiful Dome is a riveting and important addition to the global conversation taking place on gay rights and marriage equality. And it's also a love story that will leave you moved, changed, and inspired.

The book is already generating quite a bit of media buzz. Take a look!

Heal Your Heart Now Available

Last year I had the great privilege of working with Dr. Michael Miller on a book called Heal Your Heart: The Positive Emotions Prescription to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. Dr. Miller is a leading cardiologist in the field of behavioral cardiology, which explores the relationship between psychosocial factors such as stress, emotions, social connection, and behavioral choices and cardiovascular health. Heal Your Heart is based on Dr. Miller's decades of work in the field of behavioral cardiology--as a physician, a teacher, and a researcher. In addition to the beneficial behavioral choices we're all familiar with, such as not smoking, eating a heart-healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight, Heal Your Heart reveals the dramatic cardiovascular benefits of listening to joyful music, laughing, and spending time with loved ones, as well as the latest in integrative therapies such as yoga, reiki and meditation. The book is based on hundreds of peer-reviewed research studies and the true stories of Dr. Miller's patients, and includes Dr. Miller's one-of-a-kind Positive Emotions Prescription 28-Day Plan for cardiovascular health.
To order your copy directly from the fine folks at Rodale, click this link. And as a special treat, please enjoy one of my favorite recipes from the book. Quick, delicious, heart-healthy, and mood-boosting:
Sautéed Spinach with Lemon and Pine Nuts

12 ounces or one large bunch of spinach
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 to 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon pine nuts, toasted
Salt and pepper to taste

Wash spinach with plenty of cold water. If it's sandy wash at least twice and spin dry.

Heat oil in a large sauté pan over medium high heat.  Add garlic and lemon juice and sauté for about one minute. Turn the heat to high and add the spinach and a few pinches of pepper and salt. Coat the leaves of spinach with hot oil and garlic using tongs. Toss in the pine nuts and season to taste. Serve immediately.

One of the collaborative projects I completed in the past year was working with the fabulous Dianne Morris Jones on her book, Stop Breathe Believe: Mindful Living One Thought at a Time. The book is now available through Amazon and local booksellers in Des Moines, and we were thrilled to learn that Brene Brown has selected it as one of her favorite books for "wholehearted reading."

Congratulations are in Order

Hearty congratulations to Kelly Farley, whose book Grieving Dads: To the Brink and Back won the Chicago Writers Association Book of the Year Award in the category of non-traditionally published non-fiction.  It couldn't have gone to a more deserving author.

Friends and Fam

This post is not about clients, but about cool things that various friends (and one family member) are up to.  Drake University creative writing professor and longtime friend Yasmina Madden has a new flash fiction piece up at Revolver.  She also has a short story forthcoming in January from The Idaho Review.  Drake University religion professor and longtime friend Jen Harvey has a new blog.  Drake University philosophy and religion professor and longtime friend/husband Tim Knepper was recently featured in Juice magazine.  And Mark Burrows, a poet and former professor (I took an incredible class on Dante with Mark), has recently released a new translation of Rilke, Prayers of a Young Poet (Paraclete).

Fear and Faith in Paradise

Reading Luke Mogelson's incredible article in the New York Times today reminded me that I've been unpardonably remiss in writing a post on another incredible piece of writing.  Award-winning writer Phil Karber has a new book out, Fear and Faith in Paradise: Exploring Conflict and Religion in the Middle East.  I had the great privilege of working with Phil on this book a couple of years ago, and remain in awe of the scope of his travels and of his vast knowledge.  What a timely, urgently necessary book.

Iowa Women's Hall of Fame Honoree Mary Parks Stier

Huge congratulations to former client -- not to mention former publisher of the Des Moines Register -- Mary Stier, who is being inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 25th.  Mary's book, Lady Leader: 10 Ways to Play in Big Boy Business, is available through Amazon.

Grieving Dads Book Now Available

Kelly Farley's Grieving Dads: To the Brink and Back (cowritten with David DiCola) is now available on Amazon.  He also made the front page of the Chicago's Daily Herald today.  Congrats, Kelly!
